In his youth, Paul was a top-level competitive swimmer, a product of the same program that would later produce America's greatest Olympian, Michael Phelps. So it's not surprising then that Mr. Ryder, metaphorically at least, spends a lot of time in the deep end of the pool. An intellectual creature, he went to Harvard to study physics, Rutgers to study developmental psychology, and Pacifica to get his PhD in mythology.
